January:

Feast of the Three Kings

This is also known as the day of the Epiphany, when the Three Wise Men visited baby Jesus.Celebrated across Goa but in a major event at the church in the village Cuelim where they re-enact the journey.

 

February:

Monte Music Festival

A three day music festival featuring both Indian and Western Classical Music, held at the Chapel of our lady of Mount Mary, Old Goa.

 

Goa Carnival

This 3 day colourful festival was introduced by the Portuguese in the 18th century. It is similar to the carnival in Rio. It is inaugurated by King Momo in Panjim.

 

March:

Shigmo

An important folk festival heralding the arrival of spring and the harvest, which is celebrated with singing, dancing, beating drums and the throwing of powder color, similar to Holi in other part of India.

Konkan fruit festival

June:

The Feast of Sao Joao

During this feast it is common for young men to jump into wells and receive gifts like Feni from the villagers.

 

July:

Nag Panchami

At this festical the Goans worship live snakes and snake idols. They annoint them with milk, sweets and flowers.

 

September:

Ganesh Chaturthi

This is the most popular Hindu festival , celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the God os Wisdom and remover of obstacles. The elephant headed God is bejeweled, offered  sweets and then immersered into the sea, in hope that his blessing will return.

 

November:

Diwali

The festival of lights! Homes welcome the Goddess of wealth, Laxmi with clay lights (Diyas). Before sunrise, giant effigies of Navkasur as the demon king Ravana are burned.

 

December:

Feast of St Francis Xavier

The fair is held at the Church of Bom Jesus in Old Goa. The body of the saint is in a silver casket and every 4 years the body can be viewed.

The feast day is a state holiday.

 

Christmas

This is a very important day of celebration and a great day for feasting!

You will see every home decorated with paper stars, symbolizing the star of Bethlehem. Midnight mass is very popular in Goa and people attend decked in their finest clothing.

 

Goa Arts and Literature fest:

A major cultural event held at the International Center at Dona Paula, Panjim.
